Iconic images - suitable for appropriation

So, we've been set a new brief, which requires us to "appropriate" an iconic image - which can be in the style of a famous painting, a photograph or a graphic which we find inspirational and suitable for recreating as our "own".
I wanted to gather some research to get some basic ideas, of what I think could be suitable for our final images. I've had a look at a range of different styles of pictures, ranging from classical styles, fashion photography and iconic fashion images. I think that either of these styles of images could be used effectively as they would each bring their own unique style to the final piece.
Whilst carrying out my initial research into the iconic pictures, I knew that I had to focus on pieces which would be appropriate for us, as a group, to recreate. They had to be simple, yet effective, and they had to be well-known, in the sense that they were truly "iconic".
These first few images are just images I have collected which I think would be suitable, for our appropriation, they will give us ideas as how to manipulate them, and what other images could also work well.

As one of the most well known fashion images of all time, this photograph of Twiggy could be a brilliant start to the idea of appropriation.
Twiggy became famous at the young age of 16, in the 1960's as a fashion model, she was known for her androgynous looks, large eyes, long eyelashes and thin build. Although the image is extremely simple, with just a straight on shot of Twiggy, it is extremely effective in the way that it catches ones eye. I think that this could be a strong possibility for our group to "appropriate" and turn into our own.

These images are an example of a recent campaign, created by Harpers Bazaar (bottom image) which shows Jennifer Aniston recreating a range of Barbara Streisand's iconic images.
I decided to look into this as I thought it would give us great ideas in terms of what we need to do to make our image appropriation successful. The first image I researched, of Twiggy, at the top of the page, could easily be recreated using similar ideas as the Jennifer Aniston campaign. With the use of the same style of hair, make-up and background, it could become a very effective final image.
This next picture is an image which became famous after the ending of World War 2 in 1945. The surrender of the Japanese saw the celebration of people in Times Square.
This image was first published in "Life magazine" and was a spur of the moment image, which showed a sailor grabbing a nurse by the waist and kissing her.
This image could be easily appropriated and could be extremely effective, by using the same style of image, including costumes, hair and make-up, but you could add a twist to it with the inclusion of colour to the final picture.

With the Beatles being one of the most well known groups of all time, there's no doubt that the photography which comes with them is considered iconic itself. These images are another selection which I found, which I think will be popular and suitable for us to appropriate. Although the images are simple, they are effective and could be used in a creative and different way. You could keep the idea the same and use 4 men, in the same style of location and same props, or you could mix it up and change the look and sex of the models. Because the images, especially the bottom one, are extremely famous, and well known for the Beatles, then it could be a great idea to to appropriate it as close as possible.
